Residents of Bloekombos have accused a young mother of burying her week-old baby alive.
The woman, 26, was arrested after a man found the baby boy in a shallow grave.
The 50-year-old resident says he was shocked to discover the tiny body while staking a plot for his shack on a field along Old Paarl Road.
The man, who asked not to be named, says everyone had wondered what had become of the young woman’s baby after not seeing him for a few days.
“Her child was born a week ago and everyone started asking her about the baby because we never saw him or heard him cry or anything,” the man explains.
“But she could not answer our questions, all she would say was that she didn’t have food for him.
“People became suspicious and called the police on Thursday night when we could not find the baby and she was taken away.
“This morning (Friday) we made a breakthrough. I was busy staking a plot for my shack here in the field when I saw this small little hand poking out of the ground in between the bossies.
“There was also baby clothing buried in the sand with him.
“We immediately called the police back. If I hadn’t decided to stake my plot out right there, we would never have found that baby,” the shocked man says.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death is currently under investigation by Kraaifontein FCS.
“A 26-year-old female was arrested for concealment of birth on Thursday, 23 July 2020, at around 8pm in France Street, Bloekombos.
“The remains of the baby were discovered on an open field next to Old Paarl Road on Friday at around 9am. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death which may lead to more charges being formulated.
“The suspect is detained and will appear in the Blue Downs Regional Court [today],” says Van Wyk.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Kraaifontein FCS on 082 522 1044.
