Mpumalanga police officer under-fire for keeping step-daughter in chicken coop

A Mpumalanga police officer is under investigation for child negligence after her adoptive daughter (14) was found locked up in a chicken coup. The cop also has an adoptive son (8).

Provincial spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi confirms the matter as being under investigation, although no arrests have been made yet.

“I am busy writing up something with regards to the matter, but no arrests have been made yet,” he tells Move!.

Heeding complaints made against the cop, who is stationed in Kabokweni – a town in the district of Ehlanzeni Municipality – police found the girl locked up in a chicken coop while the 8-year-old boy was kept on the floor of a dirty room.

Speaking to the Daily Sun, a neighbour explained how they’d tried several times to report the police officer to authorities, including to the police and social workers, with no results.

“She might have been using her powers to stop the case from going ahead. What pains us the most is that the kids had nowhere to go and were hoping to be well taken care of,” the neighbour said. “We want her to be punished for what she did.”

Hlathi says such serious allegations, especially against one of their own, will be thoroughly investigated. “We will investigate and pursue the member through internal processes,” he says, adding that statements need to be collected and presented to the prosecutor before a verdict is reached.
