The Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape has initiated legal action for culpable homicide following the untimely passing of renowned theatre icon Mbongeni Ngema. The tragic incident occurred when the vehicle he was traveling in collided head-on with a truck on the R61 road between Mbizana and Magusheni. Ngema, accompanied by two other individuals, lost his life in the accident, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Criminal Case Initiated:

Spokesperson Unathi Bhinqose from the provincial transport department confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened with the Bizana police. The incident is currently under investigation, as the cause of the collision remains unknown. Bhinqose shared that all three occupants of the sedan sustained severe injuries, with the male passenger tragically succumbing to his injuries upon arrival at the OR and Adelaide Tambo Memorial Hospital in Mbizana.

Truck Occupants Unharmed:

According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, authorities responded to the accident scene on the R61 road between Mbizana and Magusheni in the late afternoon. A white Renault sedan, traveling from Lusikisiki to Durban, collided with a truck, leaving the driver and two passengers, including Ngema, in critical condition. While Ngema's injuries proved fatal, the truck driver and his two passengers emerged from the accident unharmed.
