AFROTAINMENT boss DJ Tira is ticked off. This comes after talks between him and Durban Tourism fell through.
The DJ has confirmed ending the relationship between Fact Durban Rocks and Durban Tourism.
According to sources, DJ Tira (real name Mthokozi Khathi) decided to dump Durban Tourism after they offered to give him R850 000 for his annual music event. Sources say Tira is angry because Durban Tourism is allegedly forking out millions of rands for Cassper Nyovest’s #FillUpMosesMabhida event, taking place on 1 December.
Sources say Tira decided to cut ties with Durban Tourism as he felt undermined.
“It’s clear they disrespect him and the people of Durban. Durban Rocks brings many people to the city, yet they decided to give millions to Cassper and offer Tira R850 000. This is unfair to Tira because the event is not only meant for him but also for Durban Tourism,” the first source said.
DJ Tira told Sunday Sun: “We started having arguments over funding during the annual Vodacom Durban July. They’ve been sponsoring us with that amount of money (R850 000). I was hoping things would change, but it seems there are people who don’t like what I’m doing for the people of Durban. For peace sake, I decided to cut ties with them.
“This is not fair for me because I’m not doing this for myself, but for the love of the city. They also benefit through the visitors who come to enjoy themselves at that event,” he said.
Another source said: “It’s a shame and a disgrace that Durban Tourism can do that to Tira. The money allocated to the #FillUp event was the money meant for the annual Essence Festival, which is not taking place this year. They should have divided the money between those two events, since both will benefit Durban Tourism.”
eThekwini city manager, Phillip Sithole, said: “Talk to Tira first and call me back again.”
But he didn’t answer his phone when the SunTeam called him back.
