Lerato Sengadi is at odds with another member of HHP’s entourage; this time it’s the late rapper’s business partner who is accusing her of capitalising on his death
Lerato might have been the love of HHP’s life while he was alive, but ever since he passed away in October 2018, she has been treated like an outcast; first by his family, and now by a business associate.
After fighting for the right to be recognised as Jabulani Tsambo’s wife, Lerato now needs to win another battle in order to be able to accept an award on his behalf.
When the news broke that HHP would be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming #SAMA25 ceremony, many around the country hailed the organisers for recognising one of South Africa’s modern day musical icons.
The awards take place almost eight months after Jabba passed on, and with this in mind, someone is going to have to collect the prize on his behalf. His surviving partner, Lerato, offered to accept the award on his behalf.
She was excited about it too, telling The Sowetan, “I’m just excited and I’m really honoured to be able to stand on that stage on his behalf and receive it. Being recognised as a legend and icon by his peers and [the] industry as a whole is undeniable that his contribution to the South African music [and] entertainment landscape has been monumental.”
However, not everybody is happy about Lerato nominating herself to receive the award on HHP’s behalf
This weekend’s Sunday World claims that Seabelo Modibe, HHP’s former business partner, is adamant that Lerato has no right to collect the award.
Speaking to the paper, Seabelo accused Lerato of using Jabulani’s name for publicity.
He then claimed that the Tsambo family was enraged upon learning of Lerato’s decision to accept HHP’s award on his behalf. Seabelo said, “I received a call from Jabulani’s family wanting to know what is happening after they read in the papers that she would be receiving the award on his behalf.
“I didn’t know anything and I phoned Universal Music Group and asked them if they played a role in this. They too said they didn’t know anything about it.”
He laid some damning accusations in Lerato’s direction, and claimed that their marital status had still not been confirmed in a court of law
The businessman added, “She must stop using Jabulani’s name for publicity, she is not Jabulani’s wife as they were not married. She cannot use the previous court order which declared her the legal wife of Jabulani because the family was granted leave to appeal by the same court. The leave to appeal automatically rescinds the court’s previous decision which declared her Jabu’s legitimate wife.”
He ended off by claiming that he and HHP had an equal stake in the company under which the rapper’s music was released before adding that Lerato had no investment in this business.
Lerato, meanwhile, has declined the opportunity to comment on this story.
It appears as if the arguments between HHP’s family/friends and Lerato Sengadi are not about to end any time soon.
Do you feel as if she has the right to collect the Lifetime Achievement Award on his behalf at the SAMAs this weekend?
