WITH the economic meltdown the country is going through at the moment, hit-maker Dr Malinga is not a man who relies on one source of income.
Dr Malinga explains that it’s in his nature to hustle and that would explain the many business ventures he is involved in. The muso recently added another title to his list of businesses. He is opening a franchise of holiday resorts across the country.
With the first Lingas Resort in Mpumalanga to open its doors later this month and the second one in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, to open in September, Dr Malinga is set to grow his business empire.
THE CHALLENGES PART OF THE EMPIRE
Dr Malinga already has a condom range, clothing brand and bottled water in his business portfolio. He explains that the resort is the answer to his problem of not being able to get his products on store shelves.
“The Lingas Resort won’t just be a resort, it will also be used as a distribution point for my range of products,” he says.
Dr Malinga says the idea to have his own Linga Resorts has been in the pipeline for years and though he’s only opening two now, the star says Lingas Resorts will be a franchise.
“The motto for Lingas Resort is ‘Go Monate Fela’. It’s a place where one will come and enjoy themselves with friends and family,” he explains.
From his days as a furniture store promoter, Dr Malinga learnt most of his business skills but this didn’t prepare him for the harsh realities of doing real business.
“Running a business is more than just producing a product and selling it. There’s more to it than that,” he says.
“You need to find partners and prove to them that they will get their return on investment. This is one of the challenges that showed me flames but I’m learning as my businesses are growing.”
Being an entertainer is a demanding job on its own. To add running a few businesses and being a family man on top of that, is a challenge. But the singer has a very strong team that helps him balance his workload.
“I have a team that makes sure things are done even when I’m not around,” he says.
