Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius was determined to spread the Christmas cheer in prison this year as he took the opportunity to share the biblical messages with his inmates.
The former Paralympian appears to have taken positive steps towards rehabilitating not only himself but his fellow inmates this festive season. According to a report in The Times UK, Pistorius has taken it upon himself to conduct bible study sessions and prayer groups with prisonsers at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre, where he is currently serving time.
Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in February 2013. Although the athlete made a brief appearance outside prison – in November 2018, to attend the funeral of his grandfather – he has maintained a silent profile for much of this year.
For the first time in months, we have been given a glimpse of what the Blade Runner has been up to while serving his time. His father, Henke Pretorius, spoke to the British publication and revealed that Oscar was doing his best to educate fellow prisoners on Christianity and messages from God.
“Oscar leads the studies and is able to accommodate to those who aren’t so familiar with the Bible to explain the meaning of all the verses. He can feel he is making a difference to others who really needed a difference to be made – to give their lives meaning, purpose and some hope. As a result, things have also improved for him.”
Apart from preaching the Lord’s word, Pistorius has also been keeping himself busy by planting and maintaining a vegetable garden in prison. Henke revealed that it has allowed him to express himself artistically:
“Oscar, being an artist, didn’t just do square blocks of vegetables, he has designed a face – the hair is a certain type of veggies and the ears and mouths are something else. It’s quite incredible.”
Oscar Pistorius is due to remain in prison for a minimum of five more years when he will then be eligible for parole.
