After growing up in difficult circumstances, Zodwa Wabantu understands what it feels like as a young girl to be menstruating and not have sanitary towels
The entertainer and socialite told the Sunday Tribune that, just like condoms, sanitary pads should also be free.
Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced during his medium-term budget speech on Wednesday that sanitary towels will be sold VAT free from April next year.
“I know what it feels like to be young, be on your periods, and not have sanitary pads,” she said.
Zodwa said that every young girl deserved to be taken care of
“Every woman has the right to have their needs taken care of, especially (sanitary) pads because going on your periods is natural and it is not something that people choose to go through every month,” she added.
Zodwa added that she welcomed the minister’s decision because many girls were forced to use toilet paper which is unhealthy.
