RADIO and TV personality Somizi “SomGaga” Mhlongo has lost some very pricey items! This was after the repo man paid the Idols SA judge a visit.
His movables were repossessed and sold at an auction on Wednesday. Some of the valuables that came under the hammer include 15 Louis Vuitton bags, a crocodile skin couch, 83 pairs of shades, Smeg fridge, two pink designer couches, his clothes – including his alter ego Madam Gigi’s outfits – artwork, Moët & Chandon champagne collection, iPhone and iPads, dining chairs, two leather couches, kitchen appliances, flat screen TVs and a Bose amplifier.
The taxman is said to have stripped Somizi’s house empty following a legal battle that started in 2014. It was reported The Fresh Breakfast Show co-host on Metro FM and Idols SA judge owed the South African Revenue Service (Sars) about R2,5 million.
It’s said SomGaga caught the taxman’s attention when he flaunted his assets on social media platforms and TV. It was reported then that he had been contacted several times by tax authorities, who pleaded with him to disclose his income and submit his personal tax returns.
But when Somizi failed to co-operate, Sars went to court and obtained a default judgment against him at the South Gauteng High Court in Jozi.
Said a source: “I don’t know why he can’t just settle his debt because he’s making money.”
Sars spokesperson Sandile Memela refused to comment, saying: “Sars isn’t in a position to divulge specific information and details on the affairs of taxpayers. Sars is bound by chapter 6 of the Tax Administration Act of 2011, dealing with confidentiality of information.”
Somizi was not available for comment and failed to respond to our messages.
