SHE is one of Mzansi’s biggest vocalists loved by many. However, music sensation, Kelly Khumalo (33), has had her fair share of bad luck when it comes to love.
Singer Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye (38), who is the father of her first child, went to jail for culpable homicide after being involved in a drag race accident that claimed the lives of four school children in Soweto.
Then her married soccer star boyfriend, Senzo Meyiwa, was killed at the house of Kelly’s mom in Vosloorus after an alleged robbery that went wrong. But the star has put all that behind her and says she is ready for love. On the other hand, Jub Jub, who is now out of prison, has found love but is missing his son in his life. All he wants is to spend time with his son, whom he claims Kelly won’t let him see.
LOOKING FOR LOVE
In a recent radio interview, Kelly admitted that she is ready to be loved. On the show the star said, “I’m looking for a man. A man who will understand that I am a full-grown woman who knows exactly what she wants and what she represents.” She went on to say, “I’ve always gone into relationships
because someone has asked me out. It has never been about, ‘do I want to be with this person? Do I want to date this person? Do I want a relationship with this person? Do I even like this person enough to be in a relationship with them?’” It seems the star, who sings about love and getting married, wants a prince charming.
UNLUCKY IN LOVE
Kelly’s relationship with Jub Jub ended when the Asine hitmaker claimed Jub Jub had been abusing her emotionally and physically.
Even though Kelly stood by Jub Jub’s side during his trial for the murder of the four school children, the singer later said that the relationship was toxic and that they were both using drugs at the time.
In a television interview after their break-up, Kelly said her career began to suffer because of her association with her then abusive boyfriend.
She said, “You can only do so much and I remember feeling, ‘I’m tired of this nonsense. There’s so much drugging, there’s so much abuse. I had enough and I had to let go’.”
She also had a relationship with former Orlando Pirates goalie, Senzo, who is the father of her second child. Even though Senzo was a married man, the pair had an affair that started around 2013 and went on until his death on 26 October 2014.
But the murder case hasn’t been solved yet as it is still unclear who killed Senzo and why. According to Kelly and her sister Zandi, intruders came in the house and tried to rob them. Senzo tried to fight off the intruders and they shot him. Senzo’s family wanted nothing to do with Kelly after the killing. She wasn’t even allowed to attend his funeral.
ACCIDENT THAT CHANGED JUB JUB’S LIFE
Jub Jub has not had it easy in the last few years. The musician was at the height of his career when a day of fun in 2010 with his former friend, Themba Tshabalala, turned sour. The Ndikhokhele hitmaker had been drinking and taking drugs with his friends when they decided to race their Mini Coopers in Soweto. The race ended in four school children dead, and two seriously injured.
The star was initially charged with murder, drinking and reckless driving. He was then sentenced to 25 years in prison. His charge was later changed to culpable homicide and his sentence was reduced to eight years in prison. The case made headlines, but Jub Jub claims the media exaggerated some of the facts to make him look bad. The rapper is now out of jail, married and has another child. He also has started releasing music. But there is one thing missing and that is bonding with the child he has with Kelly. The little boy, who has a resemblance of his father, is in Kelly’s care.
TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF
In a recent television interview, Jub Jub said that he has started a children’s foundation as a way of giving back. He feels torn that he gets to play a vital role to those children but cannot spend time with his own son. Refusing to speak about Kelly, the musician said he longed to walk in the mall with his son in matching outfits and just have a relationship with his child.
In a different interview, Jub Jub said, “The fact that I still have not see my little man for now, that’s the one thing that’s eating me up inside.”
Kelly, on the other hand, stands firm that Jub Jub will not see their son until he is older, same goes for Senzo’s family seeing his daughter. In a television interview, Kelly said, “When my children are older, they will explore that relationship with their families.”
Jub Jub says he is a changed man and has learnt a lot in prison such as the power of praying. He admits his arrest cost him many friends, out of all the friends he had acquired over his lifetime only two visited him in prison.
The star has not given up hope. He is back to doing what he does best, which is making music. He is performing at different events and is likely to release his album sometime this year.
When contacted for comment, both Kelly and Jub Jub’s phones rang unanswered.
