Media personality Solomon “Carpo” More is on a mission to shed light on mental health issues by encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
After four months of training, Carpo successfully completed a 21km race for mental health awareness with Standard Bank, and said he wants to share his story to inspire young lives not to give up.
"This is something big and close to my heart. I've been through so much, losing my mom and dad, and I want to share my story with people. I cried a lot before the race because June is the month I lost my dad.
"I know how it feels to want to kill yourself. I tried it five times after my parents passed away. I tried hanging myself, cutting myself. I did all those things. Now s a big cloud has left me," he told TshisaLIVE.
The Mahikeng-born star said he became aware of depression and mental illnesses when he moved to Johannesburg to live with his best friend, rapper Cassper Nyovest. He said the star supported him through it all.
Carpo also reflected on a near-death experience in 2017 after he punched his hand into glass, cutting a vein responsible for pumping blood to his heart.
I went to the hospital. I was bleeding bad and Cassper paid R103k cash. The doctor said no-one could survive what I survived. When I stayed with him I felt he was someone who cared about me. He was like my friend, father and brother. He advised that I seek help. He paid for my therapy so I can calm down."
After surviving attempts to take his own life and having found solace in therapy and exercise, Carpo is no longer ashamed to tell his story. He hopes it will help encourage others to speak up and know help is possible.
"I don't mind sharing my story with people. We don't talk. We're embarrassed to talk about our problems. I want people to know the real me and what I've been through. I want to touch the hearts of those who are going through what I had been going through so they can know it's okay to cry, it's okay to hurt and it's okay to ask for help and talk to someone."
Besides the benefits running has had on his mental state, Carpo has lost 20kg and is aiming to shed another 10kg. He starts a gym journey soon ahead of the premiere of a movie he is in titled The Gang due to launch later this year.
