Rapper AKA put those words on Instagram not believing one of them – but he lost the love of his life, fiancée Nelli Tembe, in an apparent suicide yesterday that rocked the music world. AKA last week paid lobola and is ‘inconsolable’.
The news of rapper AKA’s fiancée Nelli Tembe’s tragic death in an apparent suicide has sent shockwaves throughout the country.
The news broke yesterday morning, after reports that police were investigating an incident where a woman had reportedly jumped out of a window at the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town.
AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, was “inconsolable”, the family said in a statement yesterday afternoon.
The rapper announced his engagement to 22-year-old Tembe recently on social media with a picture of her engagement ring and the words: “21/02/21 – love of my life said Yesssss.”
When she announced it on Instagram simply saying: “I am happy”, AKA reshared her post alongside the caption, “LOL, you hunnies sayin’ it will end in tears. Learn a thing or two because JOKES on you lovies for being f**kin’ trolls. Happy frikken Monday.”
He announced that he paid the lobola last week on Twitter, with a cow emoji and a pic of him and the men of the families. A wedding date has not been set yet. He dedicated three songs on his latest album to Tembe: Cross My Heart, Finessin and African Man. “You gave her flowers while she was alive. You loved her for real,” one fan tweeted yesterday. The families’ statement read in part: “It is with the deepest regret that we, the Tembe and Forbes families, confirm the untimely passing of our beloved fiancée, daughter, sister and daughter-inlaw, Anele Tembe. Anele tragically passed on in the early hours of this morning.
“We are still in shock and are dealing with our emotions, as she was an exceptional and gifted young woman, with so much life ahead of her. She had a sweet nature about her and was always nurturing to those around her.
“At this hour of our grief, we humbly request that our families be given privacy and time to heal.”
Earlier, Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk did not confirm if the victim was indeed Tembe, but said police were investigating “after an incident at a hotel at about 7.45am”.
