DJ Maphorisa pledges to donate money to Nokuthula's family #CuttingEdge

South Africans are known to make light out of any serious situation, be it load shedding or an outbreak such as listeriosis. It was no different after an emotional episode of Cutting Edge aired recently.

In the episode, a family who had “buried” their daughter, Nokuthula Mjekula had just found out that she was indeed alive and had been living in Cape Town for four years without communicating with her loved ones.

In a short clip shared onto Twitter from the episode, Nokuthula’s grandmother can be heard speaking to her on the phone and begging her to come back home. She screams the name ‘Nokuthula’ before breaking into a hysterical cry, while an unbothered Nokuthula rudely asks why she’s crying.

Many tweeps found humour in the clip and in true South African style started to joke about it. The joke then escalated to places of entertainment where people would chant ‘Nokuthula’ the same way her grandmother did.

In a video that recently went viral, party goers who were at the popular Cape Town shisanyama, Rands Cape Town, can be seen chanting ‘Nokuthula’ as they sing along to DJ Maphorisa’s song, Phoyisa.

However, the DJ didn’t find any humour in the situation but rather expressed how he wants to help Nokuthula’s family by donating money to them.

“Ok lets do this. The number of retweets i get from this tweet will amount to the money i give to nokuthula’s family.. so 1 retweet = R1 Lets gooo#Nokuthula @busiswaah@casspernyovest @KabzaDeSmall_,” he wrote.

“This is not about the song, me genuinely wanna help the family, 4 years thinking your child is dead its not a joke. Sauta made it a joke twitter users a sumthing else yo,” he continued.

The DJ has urged people to get the tweet to 1 million retweets so he can donate R1 million rand to the family.

“Twitter says this is my last tweet for the day thanks for making me trend.Let’s help the Nokuthula’s family we on 20k retweets i need more Scorpion Kings Live at Sun Arena 11 April 4k tickets left thank you Sauta .Love from Phori,[sic]” he wrote.

The tweet is currently sitting on 29 600 retweets and the DJ wants more.

“Can we get to million retweets please,” he responded to a fan.
