‘Why is it that seemingly good and perfect couple split?' Many people ask.
They were regarded as one of Mzansi’s hottest celeb couples, however, as painful as it is DJ Black Coffee (43) and Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa (31) have called it a day, after nine years together.
They seemed super blessed in all spheres of earthly life, a happy marriage, beautiful boys and glittering careers. Nkosinathi Maphumulo, better known as DJ Black Coffee, and actress Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa were nothing else besides a perfect couple.
Like the proverbial titanic it seemed nothing could sink their marriage ship, not even the rumours of extra-marital affairs that had long dogged them.
It is true, they had their own highs and lows, but they stood together in a respectable silence.
All of a sudden, Enhle dropped a bombshell, a video on Instagram, after she came across a newspaper story on her looming separation and posted a reply confirming the news and admitted to having had a very rough year.
Enhle then asked for privacy while she picked up the pieces of her life, and Black Coffee had declined to comment. But, a friend close to the couple said Enhle was tired of the infidelity, and could no longer able to hold on.
“It ruined her self-esteem and her confidence for many years, and she cannot do it anymore,” said the friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“Enhle was hospitalised this year after having an anxiety attack as a result of stress.
It ruined her self-esteem and her confidence for many years, and she cannot do it anymore,” added the friend.
“I can’t tell you more, but I will tell you this: she is ready to fight for her children,” the friend went on.
Flashback, the couple’s marriage was once a bed of roses, but now it is filled with pain inflicting thorns.
Enhle had wished to keep the details of their split a closely guarded secret, however, the Sunday World exposed that the couple’s breakup had been pencilled in a court papers. According to media reports, she filed for a protection order against her ex’s sister, Nomalanga Maphumulo after allegations of verbal and emotional abuse. The abuse happened to be related to Nomalanga allegedly protecting her brother’s assets from Enhle.
THE WAY FORWARD
Terminating a marriage can be one of the most daunting transitions in life, according to organisational psychologist and marriage coach Paul Nyamuda.
“When a married couple comes to this decision, they tend to blame each other or find themselves in denial about what could have led to it,” he said.
He added that while parting ways can be messy, only respect and clarity would be helpful in the long run.
“It is a life-altering reality and is often clouded with negativity, but once they embrace this reality it will be a much more bearable experience,” he went on.
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Fissures in their marriage began to present themselves earlier this year when Enhle deleted all trace of her husband on social media. She proceeded change her surname from Maphumulo back to her maiden surname Mlotshwa, triggering rumours that there was trouble in paradise.
Before long, the rumour mill was grinding again with reports that Black Coffee had cheated with French socialite Cathy Guetta, who was previously married to David Guetta. This came after a video clip of the two sharing a hug at the Cannes Film Festival went viral.
Black Coffee swiftly tried to shut play down the rumours, and called on people not to jump into conclusions without proof.
“It’s quite sad that on social media people are so quick to confidently vilify and lynch people without a shred of evidence ITO (in terms of) wrongdoing.
“For the Record: Cathy Guetta is nothing more than a business partner and shall remain so for the foreseeable future,” he wrote on social media.
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
The couple met nine years ago, on the set of Tshisa, the SABC drama series that Enhle was featuring in at the time. Black Coffee was visiting the set and asked her out for a drink. She refused because she was seeing someone at the time, but they continued getting in touch with each other and eventually went on a date.
“We stopped at a Woolworths because all the restaurants were closed and I was breaking all of my rules because I always wanted to be taken out to a restaurant for a date,” Enhle told Anele Mdoda in an interview.
She added that she loved the conversation because it was on fleek.
Three months down the line, he proposed to her in Greece and she accepted. This was sweet music to their fans, friends and relatives, as well as everyone who believed in romance.
TWO BECOME ONE
They married in a traditional wedding ceremony at Mbali’s home in Soweto in 2011, and chose to make money before splurging on the white wedding of their dreams.
“Throughout those years we bought property, sold property, we bought land, sold land,” she said.
In 2017 the couple exchanged vows in a fairytale wedding planned by Generations star and wedding planner Sophie Lichaba. Held at Sun City, it was a star-studded affair with EFF leader Julius Malema, transport minister Fikile Mbalula and former home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba on the guest list.
The bride wore a stunning Gert-Johan Coetzee gown and the groom was dapper in a cream and navy suit.
In 2011 the couple had their first child together, Anesu (8), followed by Asante (4). Black Coffee said, Enhle was a wonderful mom to their two sons and to Lilitha and Esona, the children he had from a previous relationship.
“She’s everything I ever wanted, you know, as a partner,” he told DRUM in a previous interview (Better together, May 2017).
“She’s a wonderful mother. What’s more, she’s a great wife. She’s a great sister to my sisters and the rest of my family,” he added, at the time.
Enhle got her breakthrough when she was cast in a leading role on Tshisa in 2010. She’s since gone on to star in a number of TV shows and she’s also a businesswoman with big dreams.
“I have my own career and I don’t live in my husband’s shadow,” she told the magazine.
Motivated by her struggle to find clothes that fitted her well during her second pregnancy, Enhle started her own line of maternity wear, SE Preggoz. The clothes line was launched in New York as well as South Africa. She kept slaying in the style stakes: she collaborated with designers Quiteria and George to dress Beyoncé for last year’s inaugural Global Citizen Festival.
Enhle held down the fort while her jet-setting hubby did not disappoint on the world stage. The globally-acclaimed, award-winning DJ has struck a stellar international career working with everyone from John Legend to Alicia
Keys, David Guetta and Usher.
