Phila Madlingozi, the actor and singer known for his role as Ntando in the groundbreaking isiXhosa telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire, has been ousted from the show amid concerns over his acting abilities and alleged diva behavior, according to an insider.

Madlingozi portrayed the character of Ntando, the son of Zimkhitha, played by Zandile Msutwana. He took on the role while grieving the loss of his mother, which served as an outlet for his healing process. A trusted source from the show informed ZiMoja that Madlingozi's contract has been terminated, and Oros Mampofu will step in as his replacement. "Once he was let go, the production company searched for other candidates who would be the best fit for his character, and Oros emerged as the top choice," the source revealed.

According to the insider, Madlingozi's dismissal stemmed from consistent tardiness on set. "He frequently arrived late for production," the source disclosed. "There were instances when he showed up under the influence of alcohol or hungover. He displayed an unprofessional attitude, thinking he could act with impunity. Additionally, he exhibited diva tendencies and made unreasonable demands," the source added.

When approached for comment, Madlingozi declined to delve into the details but shared that he has moved on to other projects. "I prefer not to entertain the drama," he stated. "I have embarked on new endeavors, including shooting another show for Showmax. I cannot disclose what transpired, as I don't want to engage with it. Things unfolded as they were meant to. I have completed shooting for the show and am focused on other projects."

Season Two and Beyond

After deliberation between the channel and production company, Tshedza Pictures, it has been decided that the show will be reinstated for a second season. "Oros will join the cast starting from season two. Filming commenced in mid-November," the source disclosed. "The production will continue to be filmed in Gqeberha." Another unnamed actor from the show expressed optimism, stating, "We hope that the issues faced during the first season will be addressed and improved upon." Some actors had previously voiced concerns about accommodation, salaries, talent management, and the storyline. "However, there have been improvements, and we are hopeful for the upcoming season," the actor added.
