Emmy Award-nominated South African actress, Thuso Mbedu, has gone on to social media to launch a competition that will see two deserving matriculants winning designer dresses to wear at their Matric Dances.

For anyone completing their final year of high school, the Matric Dance is always one of the highlights of that year. However, for many girls who cannot afford to purchase a new dress, shoes and the accessories, it can also be the hardest time of the matric year. Actress, Thuso Mbedu, has launched a competition for two young girls to win designer dresses, should they not have the means to buy one.

In a competition she launched on Thursday, 1 August 2019, the actress first posted a series of images that showed off the designer dress worn by her sister in 2018. Mbedu’s sister accompanied the actress to the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) where she won the award for 2018’s Best Female Actress In A Television Drama.

The mermaid royal blue dress with white detail, is one of two dresses that the actress is giving away. The second is the designer dress she travelled to the United States with, and wore during the prestigious Emmy Awards, at which she was nominated, for the second time, under the 2018 Best Actress category. The actress will also be giving away the dress she wore at the official ceremony too.

"I wore this dress on my second trip to the @iemmys and what an honour to have been part of it a second time. The designer was winner of the first season of Project Runway SA and what a talented and light-filled human she is. I had an amazing evening and hopefully I can share the magic with one of you. I will be giving this dress away for a Grade 12 pupil for your matric dance ceremony. To qualify you need to show that you have excelled academically AND in sports. To enter please send your report card and sporting results to info@lemuelmanagement.co.za.

Please note that we will not be responding to DMs. Only entries sent to the email listed above will be considered.

The dresses were custom made so I cannot give an exact size but I generally fall into the Small, 30/32 category.

The actress ended the announcement by writing, "GUYS (BOYS AND GIRLS) ALL THE BEST WITH YOUR PREPS FOR YOUR MATRIC EXAMS! SHOW UP, SHOW OUT. APPLY YOURSELF. DO YOUR BEST. YOU ARE THE FUTURE OF SA. WE ARE WAITING TO LEARN FROM YOU."
