Shortly after news of Sam’s death was confirmed, the hashtag #KellyKhumalo topped the trends list for hours.

Last month, shortly after Sunday World reported that arrests in the case were imminent, Kelly released a strong statement.

“If you strongly feel, believe and have evidence that I had something to do with my daughter’s father’s killing or I’m somehow protecting the killers? Then by all means necessary do lock me away and throw away the key.”

Kelly added that the only thing she is guilty of is falling in love with a dishonest married man.

“And if that’s what I’m being punished for so be it. But I’m not gonna sit back and let you abuse and accuse me of something I have nothing to do with. I have co-operated with the law gave all the necessary information,” read part of the statement.

Social media users have taken to Twitter to sympathise with Kelly Khumalo, who is being blamed by some for the death of late former Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa’s father.

On Monday, 29 July 2019, South African musician, Kelly Khumalo, fell victim to social media accusations following news of Sam Meyiwa’s passing. The topic ‘RIP Sam Meyiwa’ trended on Twitter following news of his death after suffering a stroke.

On Monday, 10 June 2019, Kelly Khumalo shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram saying that she was treated unfairly as a woman following false accusations that she had knowledge regarding the murder of her daughter’s father, Senzo Meyiwa. Explaining that she was being falsely accused, Kelly admitted that the only thing she was guilty of was “falling in love with a dishonest married man”.

In the continued thread on Twitter, some social media users said that Kelly Khumalo is indirectly to blame for the death of Sam Meyiwa, who passed away before justice for his son could be served. One individual wrote in a post saying that they did not wish to know what Kelly is currently going through, however, that Kelly might not be letting out more than she knows.

Responding to the backlash on Kelly’s behalf, some social media users expressed that the blame game and misdirected anger and accusations were unfair and unjust. “Can we stop blaming Kelly Khumalo for everything that happens to the Meyiwa family please”, said one social media user. In another comment, one individual expressed that Kelly is in fact the victim, although she is being treated like the villain, and called for Kelly to be left alone.
