Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been flaunting a new love interest.
On Friday the 32-year-old set tongues wagging when he posted a picture of him posing with Durban model Sphelele Makhunga on his Twitter account, followed by a short hashtag #Blessed.
The picture shows a clearly smitten Khune and Makhunga seated closely together on a couch.
The only detail Makhunga (22) has shared on her Instagram profile is that she is a “VC” student, a possible reference to Varsity College.
The relationship between Khune and his fitness fundi former girlfriend Sbahle Mpisane, who narrowly survived a horrific car accident in August last year, made headlines about three years ago. Since the horror crash, which resulted in Mpisane spending months in hospital, the two have had an on-and-off relationship.
Two close friends of the couple told City Press that Makhunga was in Khune’s life before Mpisane’s accident. “In December last year Sbahle’s direct messages went wild with messages and pictures [of different girls] from friends and fans who alleged that, while she was in hospital fighting for her life, Khune was playing her with different girls. Sphelele was in one of the pictures. Although she never met the girl, she knew about her,” said a close confidante.
A source close to Khune corroborated the story, saying Khune and Mpisane were facing problems in their relationship before her accident, after she allegedly caught him with other women.
“The last straw was in December last year, when Sbahle was still recovering in hospital. Khune called her and she heard the voice of a woman in the background and that broke her. From that day she knew he hadn’t stopped his cheating ways,” the source claimed.
Khune did not respond to calls, text messages and WhatsApp messages sent to him requesting comment, although they were read.
Approached for comment Mpisane’s manager, Krystal Thorpe, would neither confirm nor deny the allegations. She said: “Last August Sbahle was involved in an almost fatal accident, which saw her hospitalised and fighting for her life in a coma for three weeks. She’s now on a journey of recovery, piecing her life together and getting herself accustomed to her new normal.”
Thorpe said after she was discharged from hospital, Mpisane decided to “free herself of any elements in her life that were of negative impact to her recovery and the relationship in question was one of those elements”.
“Sbahle has been doing well, she has started a light fitness regimen and is thriving under the love, care and guidance of her family. Every day is a milestone for this resilient young woman.”
It was reported earlier this week that the charges of reckless and negligent driving laid against Mpisane were withdrawn by the National Prosecuting Authority. “I am very happy that the charges have been withdrawn,” Mpisane reportedly said.
Khune’s picture on Twitter has divided fans, with some congratulating the goalie while others felt he had betrayed Mpisane.
One follower wrote: “We want Sbahle.” To which a die-hard Khune fan responded: “Bathong, where does Sbahle fit in if Khune is happily dating again? Y’all love drama, people break up all the time.”
City Press tried to track down Makhunga via Twitter and Facebook, but she did not respond to messages.
Khune is now doing light training at Kaizer Chiefs after he underwent surgery on his shoulder earlier this year. He was ruled out for the rest of the Absa Premiership season in January and he has been on the sidelines since then. He is also likely to miss the African Cup of Nations in Egypt that kicks off in June with Bafana, because he has not played for some time.
